What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS feed to whoever wants it.
It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually.
RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.
How do I start using feeds?
To start using feeds you need a reader. This is a piece of software that checks feeds and lets you read any new items that have been added. There are many different versions; some are accessed using a web browser, and some are downloadable applications.
Browser-based RSS readers allow you to access your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, while downloadable applications store them on your main computer. Different RSS readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.
Once you have chosen a RSS reader, you can subscribe to a feed in various ways:
- by dragging the URL of the feed into your RSS reader
- by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your RSS reader
Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier.
