National cargo pets
Live animals can be flown to all Air New Zealand destinations. We are the only commercial airline able to move pets.
Every year we are trusted to transport thousands of pets and live animals around New Zealand. We even support the transportation of guide dogs, endangered Kiwis and Tuataras for key national organisations.
Travelling with pets
If your pet or live animal is travelling solo, we can fly them as cargo. If your pet or live animal is accompanying you on your national travels, check out travelling with pets. If your pet or live animal is heading beyond New Zealand, you'll need to know about our international pet services.
Prepare your pet to travel
The carriage of live animals by air is regulated by various government authorities as well as by Air New Zealand and IATA. This means there are some rules around cages to optimise safety. Check out if your cage meets the requirements to travel.
The following dimensions are the maximum container sizes for pets to travel as domestic cargo. Please remember to check your aircraft type when booking your domestic journey with Air New Zealand:
- A320: Height 97cm (38") x width 79cm (31") x length 131cm (52")
- ATR72: Height 100cm (40") x width 60cm (24") x length 100cm (40")
- Q300: Height 82cm (32") x width 75cm (30") x length 120cm (47")
(Please note that ATR72 and Q300 aircraft may be interchanged at short notice for operational reasons)
If your cage does not meet the requirements, we have suitable cat and dog containers available for sale, which must be pre-booked 72 hours in advance. Book with our pet centre. In all cases, a pet indemnity must be completed when shipping your pet or live animal.

Book pet travel
All flights can sometimes have restricted space due to aircraft size/passenger numbers/perishable cargo/incompatible cargo or other factors. Therefore, to ensure carriage of your animal, it is highly recommended that you pre-book by contacting the pet centre. Animal shipments must be prepaid at the time of your booking. It is a requirement to provide a government issued photo ID at the time of presenting an animal for shipment on an Air New Zealand flight.
